October 20, 2020Did you know that vinyl flooring was first introduced to American homeowners in 1933? However, vinyl flooring didn’t become popular until the 1940s. These days, vinyl flooring has become one of the most widely used flooring material for both residential and commercial use.
Vinyl flooring gives homeowners a beautiful, durable and affordable flooring option. But just like any other flooring, vinyl comes with its own unique requirements and challenges.
This guide will show you how to clean vinyl plank flooring, so it stays looking beautiful for years to come.
Everyday Cleaning
If you let dust and dirt build up on your vinyl flooring, then you risk the finish getting scuffed. Daily sweeping or vacuuming is the best way to prevent a build up on your vinyl flooring. If your schedule does not allow for daily cleaning, try to clean your floors at least once a week.
Deep Cleaning
Sometimes, your floors need more than a quick daily clean. That’s when you need to deep clean after you sweep or vacuum.
Always check with your flooring manufacturer to find out what they recommend to ensure that you are using the best and safest products on your floors.
Most will recommend that you can use plain water with some mild dish soap mixed in. For a little extra pick me up, you could add a bit of vinegar to the water. These will remove dirt and debris while also cutting through anything sticky or gooey.
Once you’re finished cleaning, go back over your floors with a clean mop and freshwater. This will remove any soap or vinegar residue.
Do Not Steam Clean
One thing you should never use when cleaning vinyl plank flooring is a steamer. While your flooring is built tough and PVC is waterproof, it’s not meant to withstand steam.
Other Do’s and Don’ts
- Don’t use a knife or abrasive cleaner to scrub away stubborn stains or debris. This will damage the laminate finish on the floor.
- Do use a soft cloth or soft nylon brush to clean stubborn dirt. These are soft enough to gently buff the debris away without damaging your floor.
- Don’t use harsh cleaners such as bleach, ammonia, or a high pH detergent. These are corrosive cleaners and will damage the finish of your floors.
- Do use a microfiber cloth mop to clean your floors. This prevents standing water from gathering on your floor.
- Don’t use a string mop that can leave puddles.
