How Long Does a Kitchen Remodel Take?
When homeowners ask, “How long does a kitchen remodel take?” they are often thinking about construction.
But the process starts well before demolition. For many kitchen projects, the full timeline can span several months from the first design conversation to final completion. Exact timing depends on your selections, cabinet lead times, contractor availability, and the scope of the project.

1. Start With a Design Conversation
You do not need to have everything figured out before meeting with a designer. A few basic details are enough to get the conversation started.
Helpful things to bring or think about include:
- Photos of your current kitchen
- Rough measurements
- A simple wants and needs list
- What you do not like about your current kitchen
- Any important timing or deadline
2. Design, Planning & Selections
Typical timeframe: approximately 4–6 weeks
This is where your ideas become an actual kitchen plan. You and your designer will work through the layout, cabinetry, finishes, storage, countertops, appliance specifications, and other selections that affect the design.
Expect more than one conversation. It is normal to review options and make revisions before the cabinet order is finalized.
Think About Lighting During Design
Lighting can affect your contractor’s electrical work, so it is helpful to consider it while the kitchen layout is being planned.
Von Tobel does not sell decorative lighting, but we do offer some under-cabinet and accent lighting options.
3. Place the Cabinet Order
Once the kitchen design, selections, and pricing are approved, the cabinet order can be placed.
The timeline below is based on some of the more commonly selected semi-custom cabinet lines at Von Tobel.
| Cabinet Line | Approximate Lead Time |
|---|---|
| Quality Cabinets | 4–5 weeks |
| MasterBrand semi-custom, non-color match | 4–6 weeks |
| KraftMaid | 5–7 weeks |
| KraftMaid color match | 10–12 weeks |
These are working ranges, not guarantees. Manufacturer schedules, finishes, product availability, and special selections can affect timing.
4. Get Ready For Construction
Before construction starts, you and your contractor should confirm that the products and people needed for the next phase are actually ready.
Before demolition begins, confirm:
- Cabinets and key materials have arrived
- The cabinet order has been checked
- Your contractor’s schedule is confirmed
- Appliance specifications are finalized
- Materials needed for the next stage are available
A little coordination here can prevent your kitchen from being torn apart while you are still waiting on something essential.
5. Demolition & Cabinet Installation
Timing varies by contractor and project scope.
This is the phase most homeowners picture when they think about the remodel itself. The length of this stage depends on the amount of work being completed and your contractor’s schedule.
Work may include demolition, plumbing, electrical work, layout changes, flooring, cabinet installation, and other construction needed before countertops can be measured.
6. Countertops Come After the Cabinets
Typical timeframe: approximately one month after cabinet installation.
Countertops generally cannot be finalized before the cabinets are installed. Once the cabinets are in place and secured, the countertop process can begin.
- The countertop fabricator takes final template measurements.
- The countertop is fabricated to fit the installed cabinetry.
- The finished countertop is delivered and installed.
Depending on the project, you may need to use a temporary countertop surface while the finished tops are being fabricated.
7. Finish the Kitchen
Countertop installation is a major milestone, but it is not always the end of the project. Finishing work still needs to happen before the kitchen is complete.
Depending on the project, that may include:
- Sink and faucet installation
- Appliance installation
- Cabinet hardware
- Lighting
- Flooring, depending on the project sequence
- Trim, touch-ups, and final adjustments
Some Things Need to Start Early
A kitchen remodel is not completely linear. While your kitchen is being designed, a few other parts of the project should be moving forward too.
Contractor Planning
Start talking with contractors during the design phase. Do not wait until the cabinets are ordered or you are ready for demolition.
Contractor availability can significantly affect your timeline, and some contractors may be booked several months in advance.
Appliance Planning
You do not need every appliance delivered before the cabinets are ordered.
Your designer does need accurate appliance specifications before the cabinet design is finalized, since appliance sizes can affect cabinet sizing and layout.
Other Material Selections
Your designer can also help you select countertops, flooring, backsplash, sinks, faucets, cabinet hardware, and built-in storage accessories.
Thinking through these selections during design helps the whole project come together more smoothly.
So, How Far Ahead Should You Start?
There is no single timeline that fits every kitchen remodel.
If you want your kitchen completed before a move-in date, holiday, family event, or another important milestone, start the conversation earlier than you think you need to.
The goal is not to rush each stage. It is to plan the stages in the right order so the project can keep moving.
You Don’t Need to Manage All of This Yourself
A kitchen remodel has a lot of moving parts, but you do not need to understand the entire process before you begin.
Your Von Tobel designer can guide you through the cabinet and material-planning side of the project, explain what information is needed next, and help you understand how your selections fit into the larger timeline.
